Whether your little one loves crafting, exploring, or imaginative play, we’ve got you
covered with creative ideas to turn snow days into memorable learning experiences.
These activities are sure to keep the winter blues at bay and fill your home with
giggles and excitement.
Moon Sand
Picture
Moon sand is a soft, moldable, and sensory-rich material that's perfect for children to play with. It is made from a simple mix of sand and a binding agent such as baby oil, giving it a unique texture that's easy to shape and doesn’t dry out. It is ideal for creative play and encourages fine motor skills and imaginative exploration, making it a favourite for parents and children alike.

What you’ll need:
  • 8 tbsp flour or cornflour
  • 1 tbsp vegetable or sunflower oil
  • A few drops food colouring (optional)

Method:
  • Put the flour in a bowl, then slowly stir in the oil and food colouring, if using.
  • Rub the oil and colouring through the flour with your fingertips, as if you were making pastry, until the mixture feels sandy and no oil is visible. If the mixture seems too dry, add a few more drops of oil, or if the mixture is too soft, add some more flour. The consistency should be a dry, shapable clay that crumbles fairly easily when squeezed.
Sensory Reflection Bottles
Picture
Sensory bottles are simple, captivating tools designed to engage children’s senses and curiosity. These clear bottles, filled with materials like glitter, beads, pasta or colourful liquids, provide a calming and mesmerising experience as children watch the contents swirl, settle, or move. Perfect for promoting focus, relaxation, and creative exploration, sensory bottles are a fun and easy way to enhance learning through play.

What you’ll need:
  • Clean, empty recycled bottles with lids
  • Paint, food dye, water, glitter, pasta, pom poms etc

Method:
  • Children can choose the ingredients they’d like to use to create their own bottles.
  • Once everything is mixed in the bottle, children can begin to use them as ‘reflection bottles’ – something to support managing strong feelings. By shaking it up, then watching the contents float around the bottle, children give themselves time to reflect on how they feel, take some deep breaths, and find calmness again.

Salt Dough

Salt dough is a versatile and easy-to-make crafting material, perfect for little hands! Made from just salt, flour, and water, this homemade dough can be shaped, molded, and even baked to create lasting keepsakes. From ornaments to handprints, salt dough is a fun, hands-on activity that sparks creativity and provides endless possibilities for imaginative play and crafting.

What you’ll need:
  • 250g plain flour
  • 125g table salt
  • 125ml water
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 50C or its lowest setting and line a baking sheet with baking parchment.
2. Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl. Add the water and stir until it comes together into a ball. You can finish bringing it together with your hands if needed.
3. Transfer the dough to a floured work surface and shape into your chosen model. You can roll it out and cut out shapes, numbers or letters using biscuit cutters, or make any kind of model you can think of. We made some fruit and veg shapes plus cupcakes for a teddy bear’s picnic.
4. Put your finished items on the lined baking sheet and bake for 3 hrs or until solid.
5. Leave to cool and then paint.
