Parent Consultation
The process begins with a consultation between the therapist and the parents.
If you are contemplating Play Therapy for your child, the first step is to arrange a parent consultation appointment (without your child). During this meeting, we will discuss your concerns, your child's history, potential benefits for your child at home, and how Play Therapy can specifically assist your child. Often, two or three parent consultation appointments may be required. Both parents must provide consent for therapy and are expected to attend the consultation and review meetings. Each parent consultation lasts about an hour and allows the Play Therapist to gain insights into the child’s challenges, strengths, and interests. It also serves as an opportunity for parents to ask questions, familiarise themselves with the therapist, and view the playroom and toolkit. Parental involvement is crucial in Play Therapy, as it enhances the therapeutic process and supports the child's emotional well-being. By collaborating with the therapist, parents can play an active role in their child's journey toward healing and growth All consultations involving parents and children are conducted in a non-judgmental manner, with the Play Therapist approaching the process with understanding and compassion. |
Supporting your child while they attend Play Therapy
Parents are encouraged to support their child’s participation in play therapy by discussing the process positively. This reassurance can help alleviate any anxiety the child may have about attending sessions. Regular communication with the therapist is crucial. Parents should share any observations about their child's behaviour, emotional state, or significant changes at home or school. This feedback helps the therapist tailor the sessions to best meet the child’s needs. Parents should remain patient and understanding as their child navigates their emotions and experiences during therapy, recognising that progress may not always be linear. |
